On the work

Slow looking

A lobed terracotta Toranj cartouche opens at the heart of a circular solar rosette, set against a dark, fibrous handmade paper ground. Concentric rings of warm gold leaf and salmon-pink acanthus fronds radiate outward from the central medallion, filling the square field with structured solar energy.

Rendered in acrylic and gold on dark textured paper, the surface exhibits fine organic fiber inclusions that ground the metallic passages. Warm terracotta and soft rose-gold pigments define the inner cartouche, while layers of shell gold linework form fan-like radiating crests along the outer perimeter of the rosette.

The compositional logic is organized around centrifugal expansion. At the core, the central Toranj acts as the primary solar seed, from which layered botanical palmettes and curved leaf crests expand in rhythmic, multi-tiered succession. The deep value of the dark paper creates a striking backdrop that amplifies the warm luminosity of the gold.

Under ambient light, the gold leaf and metallic detailing cast a warm sheen that shifts across the radial layers as the viewer moves. The dark, tactile paper surface absorbs surrounding light, emphasizing the contrast between reflective metallic linework and opaque pigment.

At 45 × 45 cm, the artwork functions equally well as a standalone focal piece or as part of a celestial trilogy alongside Moon and Earth. Its square proportion and rich warm gold palette bring a luminous, grounding presence to domestic or institutional collection spaces.
